Alcoholism Treatment Centers

When an individual enters alcoholism treatment, a number of things run through their mind. What can I expect? How does my treatment work? What am I going to do when the program is over? The following information provides an introduction to the alcohol treatment help an individual can expect when they start rehab.

What to Expect at an Alcoholism Treatment Center

Every alcoholism treatment center is different, however there are several things that almost everyone can expect when entering into a rehab facility, including:

  • A caring staff. The men and women who work at addiction treatment centers are all dedicated to the same goal: helping their patients break the cycle of addiction and maintain their sobriety for the rest of their lives. These professionals really get to know their patients at a personal level – the better to provide them with individualized care.
  • An initial detox process. Before the real “meat” of alcoholism treatment can begin, the individual must first complete the detox process. During alcohol detox, the individual will stop drinking entirely. Detox professionals help the individual through uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms which are not life-threatening per se, but can often lead to relapse. Detox will either take place onsite, or at a recommended facility in the area.
  • Counseling. Once detox is complete, the individual is considered stable enough to move on to counseling. Individual and group counseling are the core of any alcoholism treatment center program. Individual counseling sessions are one-on-one meetings with a therapist to discuss the origins of the behavior – and develop better decision-making skills concerning alcohol. Group sessions are a chance to gain strength and support from other recovering addicts who are going through a similar set of circumstances.
  • Wellness programs. Many alcoholism treatment programs also sport offerings that help enhance the general wellness of the individual. These programs can include yoga, meditation, nutritional counseling and exercise regimens with a trainer.
  • Aftercare. Once treatment is over, aftercare programs help the individual maintain their sobriety. Whether it is through the support of fellow recovering addicts in a 12 step group, or the shared responsibilities of a sober living home, these programs help ease the transition back into the “real world”.
