Alcohol Addiction Treatment Phases
Alcohol addiction, more commonly known as alcoholism, is one of the most prevalent causes of long-term disease and death in the United States. In 2010, a study showed that as few as three to four drinks a week can not only increase the risk of developing breast cancer, but increases the likelihood that the cancer will recur following treatment. Studies also showed that binge drinkers are at an increased risk of developing pancreatic cancer and binge drinking can lead to memory impairment in those over 60. Alcoholism also puts individuals at an increased risk for liver-related diseases, such as cirrhosis.
Americans drink alcohol in all kinds of social situations, making it difficult for people to determine if they have a problem with consumption. Speaking with professionals about your alcohol usage can help you determine whether or not you need to enter a treatment program for alcoholism. There are many different types of alcohol treatment facilities. While their approaches to treatment differ from program to program, the core elements of treatment remain generally the same at each center.
Core Elements of Alcohol Addiction Treatment
Most every alcohol treatment program incorporates three key elements that provide a cohesive means of treatment that helps patients achieve long-term sobriety.
- Detox. During detoxification patients are treated for their physical addiction to alcohol. Medical detox programs use medications to supplement the addictive substance and patients are gradually weaned from these medications later. In a natural detox program, patients experience withdrawal symptoms in full effect, without medication but while still under constant supervision. All detox programs are carried out under the supervision of medical professionals to ensure the safety of the patient.
- Counseling. Alcohol counseling provides a chance to address the psychological causes of alcohol addiction. Patients are encouraged to speak freely with counselors and fellow recovering addicts, to help them appreciate the influence that alcohol has on their health and in their lives. The individual is guided to understand the psychological basis for their addiction so they can address their alcoholism at the source.
- Aftercare. Aftercare programs continue to offer patients support and hold them accountable after their rehab treatment has been completed. Community-based support groups, sober living facilities and professional counseling are some options available to patients.
