Elements of Treatment for Alcohol Addiction

Elements of treatment for alcohol addictionAlcohol addiction (or “alcoholism”) strikes millions of people around the country each year. Thousands of individuals die as a result of alcoholism each year, be it from liver damage or a fatal car accident that occurs when someone drives under the influence. The greatest weapon against alcoholism is the life-saving work being performed at alcohol rehab centers across the United States.

The alcohol treatment help provided at these residential and outpatient facilities help individual get sober, and then maintain that sobriety for the rest of their lives.

How each facility approaches these efforts may differ from program to program, but the core elements remain the same in almost every treatment center.

Core Elements of Alcohol Addiction Treatment

There are three core elements found in almost every alcohol treatment program: alcohol detox, alcohol counseling and aftercare.

  • Alcohol Detox. Detoxification is the process by which individuals overcome their physical addiction to alcohol. While under professional supervision, the individual stops drinking alcohol — and once persevering through withdrawal symptoms will have given their body a chance to rid itself of harmful alcohol toxins.
  • Counseling. Alcohol counseling is a chance to cut to the root causes of alcohol addiction. By talking openly and honestly with counselors and fellow recovering addicts, the individual breaks down the walls of secrecy and isolation caused by alcoholism – and develops honest life-strategies to help them maintain sobriety.
  • Aftercare. Alcoholics Anonymous, sober-living and follow up counseling are all forms of aftercare. These programs may seem very different on the surface, but each work towards helping the individual stay sober and feel supported in the weeks and months following treatment.
