Alcoholism and Obsession

Alcoholism and obsessionDo you tend to get “stuck” on an idea or habit? Do you have an obsession with alcohol, drinking or getting drunk? If so, you are not alone. Obsession with alcohol is one of the primary symptoms of alcoholism.

The Difference between Obsession and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Many people confuse obsessive behavior with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), but there are differences between the two. An obsession with alcohol occurs when a person constantly thinks about consuming alcohol. The person who is obsessed with alcohol may use alcohol as a way to counteract feelings of anxiety, alcohol withdrawal or depression. Symptoms of alcohol obsession include the following:

  • Constantly talking about alcohol
  • Often planning to drink or arranging to drink
  • Planning ways to hide drinking behavior
  • Thinking about alcohol to the extent that it interferes with normal life

Obsessive-compulsive disorder occurs when a person has a recurring obsessive thought or worry. The obsessive thought is usually not likely to happen, yet it causes the person a great deal of distress. Compulsions are ritualistic behaviors that the person does in order to stop feeling anxious about the obsession. Drinking alcohol can be a compulsive behavior in OCD, or alcohol abuse may be a way to try to self-medicate the distress and embarrassment that OCD causes. Both obsession with alcohol and obsessive-compulsive disorder can occur in a person with alcoholism. The best treatment for these co-occurring disorders is integrated treatment.
