Types of Alcohol Treatment Centers
Alcohol treatment centers can be very different from one another and deciding on the right program for the individual can be confusing. Many patients have difficulties determining what type of program their addiction requires and what type fits their personality type. Below we will discuss the different types of treatment programs a patient can enroll in.
Common Alcohol Treatment Programs
There are two main categories of treatment programs available to patients. The first decision you make as a patient will be whether a residential program or outpatient program is right for you. Although the methodologies these programs use are similar (both offer detox, counseling and aftercare guidance), the treatment is administered in very different ways.
- Residential alcohol treatment. In a residential treatment program, the individual lives at the facility while they receive treatment. The time commitment is substantial and residential programs are usually ideal for patients who have a serious to severe physical dependency on alcohol; patients like this usually experience a more severe withdrawal period and can benefit from constant care and supervision. These programs are also a good option for patients who find they cannot focus on treatment and staying sober while living at home. A patient faced with a continuous string of negative influences or who is constantly feeling stressed can find staying sober much more difficult. Residential alcohol treatment programs commonly offer other ways to enhance wellness, including holistic activities, exercise programs and healthy, prepared meals.
- Outpatient alcohol treatment. Outpatient programs allow patients to still receive continuous care for their alcoholism while they live at home. In an outpatient program, individuals do not live at the facility but attend regularly scheduled meetings with counselors and medical professionals. Many patients can maintain their jobs or continue to go to school during some or all of the treatment. Outpatient programs are recommended for those who have a moderate addiction to alcohol, but also have a supportive home environment. Outpatient programs are not a realistic option for every patient.
Specialized Alcohol Treatment Centers
Practically every treatment program can be categorized as either residential or outpatient, but there are many specialized programs that offer a unique brand of treatment for a specific type of patient, such as:
- Teen alcohol treatment centers
- Alcohol treatment centers for women
- Holistic alcohol treatment centers
- Dual Diagnosis treatment centers
